In Gutenberg's Art Practicum, students explore the concept of mastery by learning how to perform, notate, and compose music.
To expand their notions of what musical composition can be, Gutenberg students visit the gamelan room (Indonesian percussion orchestra) in order to see how the Javanese composed traditional music. In playing the gamelan instruments, students come to see how musical compositions can be stratified with some instruments playing the main melody (called the "balungan"), punctuating instruments, and larger gongs."
By the end of the term, each student composes an original piece of music (played on an Irish tin whistle), by applying the principles learned in the course.
