After successfully re-introducing general education classes during Winter term at the Lane Community College Mary Spilde Downtown Center (MSDC), located at 101 W 10th Ave, new classes including criminal justice, math, and communication will be offered as well as the existing general education courses, English as a second language, adult basic and secondary education, small business development and senior companion programing at the center. “Our goal is to provide classes students need in an accessible and convenient format and schedule,” explained Dean of Social Sciences Philip R. Martinez. “For some students, classes at the MSDC means they have more time for work, school, and family obligations by reducing their commute.”Courses are being offered downtown to better serve students by reducing travel time for those who use public transportation. The courses also better serve students who work or live closer to the downtown area. The MSDC is located across the street from the downtown Eugene LTD Bus Station and close to paid parking on the street and in garages. With these classes, students can meet a portion of the requirements for the popular Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer (AAOT) in writing, math, communication, social science, criminal justice, and human services. The AAOT is a collaboration that allows students to complete introductory courses at a community college and then transfer to any 4-year institution in the Oregon, having met the lower division general education requirements for baccalaureate degree programs. This means students who complete the AAOT to transfer to any Oregon public four-year university and enter as a junior with their general education requirements already met.Additionally, Lane Child and Family Center operates a Preschool Promise classroom in the old Titan Market downtown. The facility serves 14 children, ages 3-5, five days a week.Applications for Spring term are now being accepted with classes beginning April 3.
