Commissioners Honor Sue Allen as Senior Volunteer of the Month

Douglas County Commissioners Tom Kress, Chris Boice, and Tim Freeman, along with our Douglas County Senior Services Department are pleased to announce that Sue Allen was awarded the Douglas County Senior Services Volunteer of the Month award for February 2023.  Commissioner Tom Kress was honored to present Sue with the award at the Bistro Sixty Senior Dining Site in Glendale on Friday, February 17. Bistro Sixty Glendale is located at 176 Glendale Town Road in Glendale, inside the Special Peoples Depot. “On behalf of the other Commissioners and myself, thank you, Sue, for serving the senior community as a volunteer for Bistro Sixty in Glendale. You help make our program so successful,” stated Commissioner Tom Kress, liaison Commissioner to the Douglas County Senior Services Department.             Douglas County Senior Services Food Coordinator Darla Hilburn and Food Service Worker Sharon Haas nominated Sue for the Douglas County Senior Services Volunteer of the Month award. They said, “Sue is a great volunteer!” Sue has been volunteering at Bistro Sixty Glendale for seven years. She moved to Douglas County thirteen years ago to be near her two children and six grandchildren. Sue spent forty years working for Safeway, in her retirement she dedicates herself to the community.   In addition to volunteering for the Bistro Sixty in Glendale, she also spends time volunteering at her church by serving in the Clothing Closet and the Celebrate Recover program. When she’s not helping at church or at Bistro Sixty, she enjoys playing with her grandchildren and also loves quilting and gardening.  “My neighbor knocked on my door years ago and told me they need my help at the Senior Dining Site! I’ve been volunteering there ever since. It’s so fulfilling in so many ways. It really blesses my day.”               Our Bistro Sixty Senior Dining Sites prepare meals on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at our seven rural dining site locations in Glide, Glendale, Reedsport, Riddle, Sutherlin, Winston, and Yoncalla. Senior Services staff know there are others in our communities who could benefit from their Meals on Wheels delivery program and/or meals at their Bistro Sixty Senior Dining Sites.  If residents know of friends or family who are unable to drive, need assistance with daily living activities, would benefit from hot meal delivery, or need other assistance, they are encouraged to call the Aging & Disabilities Resource Connection in the Douglas County Senior Services Department at (541) 440-3677 or by sending an email to adrc@co.douglas.or.us.              Douglas County’s seven rural Senior Dining Sites and Meals on Wheels programs are managed by Douglas County Senior Services Department staff but are successful because of the dedication of volunteers like Sue. To get involved with Douglas County Bistro Sixty Senior Dining Sites and Meals on Wheels programs or to learn more about volunteer opportunities, contact Darla Hilburn at the Douglas County Senior Services Department via email at dahilbur@co.douglas.or.us or by calling (541) 440-3677.   Thank you, Sue!
