The Slug Shootout was a great success for SWOCC swimmers. As the lone 2-year program, the Lakers demonstrated their strengths against robust NCAA D2 & 3 and NAIA programs both days of competition. Day 1 started off strong with our women's 200 Medley Relay of Tetiana Yevminova, Sara Alvarez Fernandez, Paula Albala, Dominique van Vuure finishing 5th with a time of 1:52.60. The Men's relay of Geddis, Jamal, Matthäi, and Howard followed up with 4th (1:37.01). Later that day we had a strong Men's 50-yard Freestyle showing with Adam Geddis taking 1st with a 21.97 and Robbie Garden 3rd with a 22.13. The passion and competitiveness didn't stop there. We had Sara Alvarez Fernandez give us a drag race to the finish of her 400 IM being touched out for first with a 4:34.89. The Men's 100-yard fly proved to be a display of our depth in the butterfly going 1, 2 in the event with Antoine Famechon (52.55) and Max Matthäi (52.57) respectively. Later in the evening Alverez Fernandez did not disappoint with the win in the Women's 100-yard Breaststroke (1:07.33) just a hair away from the school's record. Finishing up day 1 the men's 400-yard freestyle relay of Jamal, Howard, Garden, and Geddis delighted the crowds with a come from behind win in a time of 3:12.42. The women ultimately finished 4th with 219 points overtaking Fresno Pacific by a narrow margin and the men in 3rd with 370 points.
Starting of day 2 of competition with excitement, Alverez Fernandez took home yet another win in the Women's 1650 in a time of 18:08.14. A few events later Adam Geddis took the show by winning the Men's 50-yard Backstroke (24.46) but Geddis doesn't stop there. Later in competition, Geddis showed he still had more in the tank with the win for the Men's 200-Yard Backstroke (1:55.13). Alverez Fernandez followed suit in the Women's 200-yard breaststroke with the winning time of 2:27.25 and then had a quick turnaround to take yet another win in the Women's 200 IM (2:11.82) by out touching 2nd place by three tenths of a second. Geddis then matches the energy winning the Men's 200 IM (1:58.96). Ending the meet with the exciting women's and men's 200-yard freestyle relays where the women finished 4th and men finished 3rd. At the end of the Day 2 Slug Shootout meet the women held onto 4th with a demanding win over four 4-year universities. The men had some clutch wins and showed their depth finishing solidly in second place with 530 points! It was a great meet all around representing SWOCC with pride and showing that JUCO swimming is no push over. GO LAKERS!
