The Douglas County Board of Commissioners issued a proclamation on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at the Weekly Business Meeting calling upon all citizens of Douglas County to honor our veterans on Veterans Day and in support of the 67th Annual Douglas County Veterans Day Parade. The proclamation was presented by Commissioner Boice, on behalf of the Board and acknowledged that. “We know that the freedoms we enjoy as Americans have been purchased and protected at a high price throughout our history. Thousands of courageous men and women have donned the uniform of our Armed Forces and built a noble tradition of faithful and dedicated service to our Nation. Since the establishment of the original 13 states, Americans have been willing to fight and die to preserve their individual rights as guaranteed in the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights. We know we can never fully repay our debt of gratitude to those heroic men and women who served, were wounded, or died in battle. We will continue to draw inspiration from the heroism and dedication of those who currently serve and sacrifice for the cause of liberty and justice.” A copy of the video presentation can be found on the Douglas County Government Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/DouglasCountyeGovernment.
Commissioner Tom Kress presented proclamation certificates to the attending members of the Douglas County Veterans Day Parade Committee: Dan Loomis (US Army retired), Mary Newman-Keyes, Carol Hunt, Eric Bagwell (USAF retired) and John Pierson (USAF retired); as well as local Veterans: Jim Barnett (USMC retired), Robert VanNorman (US Army retired), Jerry Anderson (US Navy retired), Jim Little (US Navy retired), Tammy Turner (USAF retired), John Fowler (US Navy retired) and Rick Scipiati (US Army retired).
The 67th Annual Douglas County Veterans Day Parade is scheduled to take place in downtown Roseburg on Friday, November 11, 2022, beginning at 11:00 am. The Douglas County Veterans Day Parade has a long-standing tradition for supporting and honoring our veterans on Veterans Day, and has been held in Roseburg every year for almost seven decades on National Veterans Day. The worthy and steadfast tradition has a well-earned title as “Oregon’s Greatest Veterans Day Parade”. This year the Grand Marshals for the Douglas County Veterans Day parade will be “U.S. Navy Submarine Veterans.” The corresponding parade theme this year is “The Silent Service – Invisible, Invulnerable, Invincible.”
The Douglas County Veterans Day Parade will follow the traditional route through downtown Roseburg starting on the corner of NE Fowler Street and NE Diamond Lake Blvd, turning left onto NE Jackson Street, which becomes SE Jackson Street, turning left onto SE Lane Street, left onto SE Main Street, right onto SE Douglas Avenue and concluding in front of the Douglas County Courthouse. We encourage citizens to make sure they fill ALL spaces along the entire parade route (both sides of the street and sidewalks) in order to make sure that our participating veterans receive ample accolades for their dedicated service to our county as the move along the parade route. Please note that the Veterans Day parade entry deadline has passed, but late entries will be added to the parade line up in the order in which they are received, but will not be judged.
“My fellow Commissioners and I would like to express our genuine gratitude to all of our veterans for their service, and extend our sincere appreciation to the members of the Douglas County Veterans Day Parade committee and to all the parade participants for their continued dedication to our cherished annual event honoring our veterans!” - Commissioner Freeman.
